Let's breathe
When anxiety or panic takes hold, being told to “just take a deep breath” doesn’t always help. In fact, when you're already feeling on edge, some breathing exercises can leave you feeling even more uncomfortable. That's why this course starts by meeting you where you're at and recognising that not every approach suits everyone. You'll also quickly learn that taking a “big deep breath” is the last thing you should be doing. We'll explore the relationship between your breathing, your body and your mind, and how your everyday breathing habits may influence the way you respond to your external environment. You'll discover how your breath and nervous system continually communicate, why breathing is about more than simply breathing in and out, and why simply breathing 'slower' doesn't change your breathing long term. Using principles from the Buteyko Breathing Method, you'll learn to recognise unhelpful breathing habits and gradually practice breathing that is slower, lighter and lower, supporting more functional everyday breathing and your ability to pivot through lives challenges more easily. You'll be guided through practical techniques including humming, Many Small Breath Holds, Breathing Slow and Breathing Light. Rather than intense, hyperventilation-style breathing, we focus on gentle, progressive breathing retraining that allows long term change rather than just feel good exercises. We'll also look beyond the exercises at everyday ways to support your nervous system, including making more “deposits” through rest, time in nature, reading and consistent sleep. You'll finish with a practical Calm the Mind plan to help you integrate what you've learnt into daily life. Less overthinking. More in the body. More exhaling. Better breathing.
